Background: The building dates from the 13th Century and was a manor house for several hundred years before it became an inn. Sidney Godolphin was a poet and fought as a Cavalier during the Civil War. His ghost tells the story.
Ghost Story: I was a gentle man but did my duty and fought against the Roundheads. There was a local fight and although I fought valiantly I was shot. My comrades carried me to what is now the hotel's porch and it is on the stone bench, which is still there, that I died.
I walk the corridors of the hotel in full military uniform and a wonderful plumed hat. Don't be afraid if you see me, I mean no harm.
