Courtiers House

Location of the haunted place: Clifton Hampden, near Oxford.

Origin of the haunting: 18th Century

Background of the haunted place: Courtiers House is a red-brick Georgian mansion. It has been a school and an institution. In the 18th Century it was the home of Captain and Sarah Fletcher. He was a naval officer who was frequently away from home. Sarah's ghost tells the story.

Ghost story: I loved him with all my heart but it wasn't enough. He went away and left me alone in this house. Even when he came home he did not spend time with me but preferred the company of others. I was a young woman of 29 and I didn't know what I was doing wrong.

I found out he was arranging a bigamous marriage to another woman. She was a rich woman and I had nothing. I went to the ceremony and stopped his treachery. My husband returned to his ship and I returned home. But I could not take anymore. On the 7th June 1799, I went home and hanged myself from our bed with a pocket-handkerchief and a small piece of cord.

The house has changed over the years but it is still my home. Lots of people have seen me, some will not speak about it. If you see a woman in a black cloak and purple ribbon you will know it is me. I have not found the peace that people hoped I would. In Dorchester Abbey you will find my grave and on my headstone it is written:

May her Soul meet that Peace in Heaven which this Earth has denied her.

I hope that one day I will find peace.
