Background of the haunted place: A 76-foot high section of wall is all that remains of this once grand Norman castle. The De Braose family lived in style in this fortress for many years. Towards the end of the 15th Century, Sir Hubert De Hurst and his wife Lady Maud were in residence. Her ghost tells the story.

Ghost Story: My husband had always been jealous. He was older than I and this made him worse. I know I hurt him, but he didn't have to be so cruel. The man I loved, Sir William De Lindfield, did not deserve such a horrible death. We cannot help who we fall in love with, our hearts cannot be easily swayed from their true path. I loved my husband once, I hope he knew that.

He trapped my lover and walled him up alive. I found him as he was placing the last course of bricks that sealed Sir William's fate. That was my last day on this earth as well. I was found dead the next day.

Years later my lover's skeleton was found crouched with his head resting on his hands. I still wander this place calling for my lost love. I hope, one day, he will hear me.
